The Great Wall

As is known to all, the Great Wall, which is a rare military defence construction of ten thousand Li stretching on the mountains, has been a construction symbol of China. An American astronaut said that the Great Wall was visible from the moon. The huge wall sways from the northwest and north China to the east and west on the winding mountains.

The Great Wall is one of the most majestic man-made projects in the world. It was created by 300,000 ancient Chinese mainly as a defence project at first sponsored by the First Emperor of Qin Dynasty. During Han Dynasty, the Great Wall guarded the Silk Road linking the east and the west.

But nowadays, the ethnical, cultural and religious difference no longer exist. In China, a multi-national country, the defence function of the Great Wall gradually disappears, but as a cultural heritage, the Great Wall belongs to the world. In 1987, the Wall was listed by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site. The Venice charter says: “Historical and cultural architecture not only includes the individual architectural works, but also the urban or rural environment that witnessed certain civilizations, significant social developments or historical events.” The Great Wall is the largest of such historical and cultural architecture, and that is why it continues to be so attractive to people all over the world.
