Shanghai World Expo 2010

Expo 2010, officially Expo 2010 Shanghai China is being held on both banks of the Huangpu River in the city of Shanghai, China, from May 1 to October 31, 2010. It is a World Expo in the tradition of international fairs and expositions. The theme of the exposition is “Better City – Better Life” and signifies Shanghai’s new status in the 21st century as the “next great world city”.The expo Logo features the Chinese character 世 (‘world’, Chinese “shì”) modified to represent three people together with the 2010 date. It is the most expensive Expo in the history of the world’s fairs. The Shanghai World Expo is also the largest World’s Fair site ever at 5.28 square km.

A new version of the Seven Wonders of the World has been drawn up, based on over 100 million votes cast from people in 200 countries. New Seven Wonders of the World is a contemporary attempt to create an alternative to the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World list. The worldwide popularity poll was organized by the private, non-profit Swiss-based New Open World Corporation (NOWC). The winners were announced on July 7, and include the Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu in Peru and the Taj Mahal in India. The vote, which was drawn from 21 contenders, attracted some cristicism, including from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which said last week that the new wonders of the world should not be chosen in a popular vote.
