Carstles in different regions embody regional characteristics, and carstles of different times are the expressions of history. People often relates castles with princes and princess because they means noble, elegance and romance. Here are some top castles worldwide for you to enjoy.

Fayrac Manor Beynac, France

6. Fayrac Manor Beynac, France

The castle was built from the 12th century by the barons of Beynac (one of the four baronies of Périgord) to close the valley. The sheer cliff face being sufficient to discourage any assault from that side, the defences were built up on the plateau: double crenellated walls, double moats, one of which was a deepened natural ravine, double barbican. The oldest part of the castle is a large, square-shaped, Romanesque keep with vertical sides and few openings, held together with attached watch towers and equipped with a narrow spiral staircase terminating on a crenellated terrace. To one side, a residence of the same period is attached; it was remodelled and enlarged in the 16th and 17th centuries. On the other side is a partly 14th century residence side-by-side with a courtyard and a square plan staircase serving the 17th century apartments. The apartments have kept their woodwork and a painted ceiling from the 17th century. The Salle des États (States’ Hall) has a Renaissance sculptured fireplace and leads into a small oratory entirely covered with 15th century frescoes, included a Pietà, a Saint Christopher, and a Last Supper in which Saint Martial (first bishop of Limoges) is the maître d’hôtel.

7. Hagenau Castle, Austria

Hagenau Castle, Austria

The marvellous castle is located where the river Mattig flows into the river Innskip. It is about 15 minutes away from the train stop called “Schloss Hagenau” on the route Neumarkt – Braunau via Schloss Bogenhofen (Bogenhofen castle). With its towers, the castle still looks like it looked in the 16th century. There are 2 round towers at the south side and there are 2 square towers at the northern side. Facing the courtyard, there were arcades, which are walled up now. Behind the castle there is a park. In the park there is gothic church which was consecrated in the year 1515. This romantic castle in a lake is definitely worth visiting!

Bodiam Castle,England

8. Bodiam Castle, England

The appearance of Bodiam Castle is exactly how most people imagine a medieval castle should look like, with its square of walls, a round tower at each corner, and a square tower midway along each wall, entirely surrounded by a moat. That it looks so perfect and picturesque may not be by accident for many people have debated whether the castle was really built as a defensive fortress or as an elaborate stately home. A royal licence to crenellate his manor house, in order to protect the local area from a possible French invasion, was given to Edward Dallyngrigge in 1385. This wealthy veteran of the Hundred Years War used the licence as an excuse to build an entirely new castle nearby. Little is known about the castle during the middle ages, but it doesn’t appear to have been inhabited after the 15th century. Later owners of the castle took measures to preserve the building, most notably Lord Curzon who acquired the castle in 1917 and undertook a restoration of Bodiam. Thanks to the work he carried out it is now possible to climb most of the towers and walk on top of some of the walls.

9. Château de Chillon, Switzerland

Château de Chillon, Switzerland

The castle appears to rise out of the waters of Lac Loan, where it occupies a rocky islet and is connected to the mainland by a small wooden bridge. The setting could hardly be more dramatic–and it’s certainly beautiful, at least to modern visitors who know they won’t be assigned to basement quarters for an indefinite stay.

Château d'Ussé, France

10. Château d’Ussé, France

The Château d’Ussé was reconstructed in the 15th C (1485). From 1807 to 1813 Ussé was the home of the Duchess of Duras, Chateaubriand’s friend. This dazzling masterpiece stands impressively over the Indre Valley. It is situated on 12 hectares (the castle itself is 600meters squared) south of Paris. D’Ussee is well known for the Kings gardens which were designed by Le Notre and for its dramatic spiral staircase. Charles Perrault took the inspiration from Usse (the chateau of dreams) when writing “Sleeping beauty.” Ussé has a chapel on the edge of the forest. The chapel is a Gothic to Renaissance style architecture that can be seen in this region.
